Way busy turning over rooms again today, as pretty
much all of the worker boys have gone now for the weekend. You just never know
what you’re going to come across when you go through rooms after the guests
have left – unexpected treasures! So far, I have found: one girlie magazine; two
containers of forgotten shower gel – one for men (‘Want to make your morning
monumental? The stuff of legends? LYNX Rise with lime extract and Himalayan
minerals stimulates your senses to jump start your mind and body. LYNX Rise:
Conquer the Day!’ Underneath this are two teeny side-by-side graphics: one of a
man showering with an arrow pointing to the other which is of a man facing
three tallish, ‘come-hither’-posed women. Underneath this is a line composed of
a pair of lips and the words: UNLIMITED FEMALE ATTENTION – and all this in two-toned
paint, portrayed in less than one third of an inch. Can’t help but wonder if
there isn’t somehow double entendre attached to the name of the product?), and one
for women (Japanese Spa, nourishing shower gel, with green tea, rice milk and
jasmine. With its uplifting fragrance, this shower cream transforms daily
cleansing into an exquisite ritual – for soft, cared for skin, every day.); two
pair of men’s pants (remember, this is England where ‘pants’ is closely aligned
with ‘under’ – one tossed off, behind the bathroom door, the other new, dredged
out from beneath the bed); a plethora of yesterday’s newspaper; one (unused)
sanitary pad; three personal-sized packets of ‘Snowman’ tissues; and various and sundry low-value coins – even a one cent euro piece.
There was this one room, inhabited by a couple of
workmen (ordinarily they choose to have their own room) who, amazingly, always
kept their room immaculate – even made their beds. To paint you a picture – they
kept their extensive tubes and bottles of toiletries carefully lined up in a
row, hung up their towels after using them, and put their trash, if they had
any, in the bin. I always loved going in to service that room because it wafted
of dreamy men’s cologne. But, anyway . . . I digress. After they had left for
the week – returning Monday again – I discovered that they had left behind the
bright blue washcloths they had gotten themselves at ASDA. I asked Stacey, ‘so,
what do you DO with usable stuff people leave behind?’ Mostly the answer always
comes back to get rid of it – really no time to fuss with stuff, unless it’s of
some value, at which time hold it. Somehow, I just couldn’t do it – seeing as
how I knew those good-smelling men were coming back – so I washed up the cloths
and they will be in their room when they check in on Monday.
Recently one of my
children asked me why I like where I’m at and what I’m doing – because,
obviously, I do! Good question - why DO I and what is it about it that appeals
to me? After a great deal of consideration, I have come to the conclusion that I
am enjoying my experience here because what my days consist of is more or less
a ‘sorting, fussing/puttering about, putting things to right, bringing all the
loose ends together’ type of work – all of which is engaging to my
sensibilities – a great deal, actually. Not only that, but I am NOT in charge
AND seeing as how I am not being paid, I can’t get too far off. Plus, I like
Loraine, and she appreciates me . . . and I like the other people I work with .
. . and then there’s the hospitality aspect of it, and the interaction with
guests, which I like tremendously . . . and then . . . and then . . . the list
goes on and on. (How’s that for a treatise on my motives?!)
Bumped into Jez as I was headed out the door, late
afternoon. He said, ‘going out shopping?’ referring to the aspects of shopping
associated with women, like trying on clothes, or shoes, or jewellery (Br spelling),
etc. I replied, ‘yeah – to Aldi’s.’ To
which he quipped, ‘oh, you spendthrift!’ Haha. (Probably just as well, though, that I am SO busy –
gives me less time to get out and spend my hard earned dough. How did Jez know
me SO well?!)
It is the day
Les Mis is being released in the UK
and Europe. I know where Ashley will be tonight, on account of she told me so!
Also today, the first official portrait of the
Duchess of Cambridge was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London –
that would be Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, future Queen Mother. Some
think it doesn’t do justice to her beauty, though It is reported that Her
Majesty approves. You be the judge:
